Human Rights Watch described the measures adopted by Qatar two days ago to allow some foreign workers to leave the country, as a measure taken by Tamim under international pressure, it is inadequate and does not meet Qatar's commitments to the International Labor Organization last year.
The statement, released on Thursday, said Qatar had faced widespread international criticism over its mistreatment of foreign workers it hired to construct the infrastructure for the World Cup in Doha in 2022.
The UN organization noted that scrutiny on the provisions of law no. 13 of 2018, as promoted by Qatari media, reveals that it is confined to certain categories of foreign labor, and exclude those working in the public sector and in homes and the army from the condition of sponsor’s consent, it also gives employers the right to request their exemption from the new regulations, which does not comply with international human rights standards.
