Georgia Sens. David Perdue and Johnny Isakson and Delta Air Lines Inc. CEO Ed Bastian are in the midst of a feud involving Qatar Airways and the Trump administration, Atlanta Business Chronicle reported.
Qatar Airways acquired Air Italy, a small, struggling Italian carrier, in 2017. Prior to the acquisition, Air Italy, formerly known as Meridiana, was primarily serving domestic Italian routes and seasonal international service between Naples and Palermo, Italy and New York.
The Italian carrier continues to lose money, roughly hundreds of millions of euros, but is somehow substantial improving its fleet and expanding its routes.
Those senators wrote to Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross asking them to investigate whether Qatar is breaking international agreements.
If their claim is proven, Qatar Airways could be in violation of the Open Skies agreement with the U.S., which prohibits the use of government funds for the purpose of operating flag carriers.
