Quartet leaders attack Doha’s changed positions

On Monday, Saudi Arabia criticised Qatar for rejecting the outcomes of recent Mecca talks regarding regional tensions with Iran. United Arab Emirates also accused Qatar of "backtracking" on the summit's outcomes.

After attending the three meetings on the sidelines of Mecca Summit, Doha said on Sunday that it rejected the outcomes as it had not been properly discussed.

Adel al-Jubeir, Saudi Arabia's foreign minister, responded severely. Khaleej Times reported that he said on Twitter "Countries... during summits announce their positions and reservations in the meetings according to customs and not after the meetings".

Saudi Arabia hosted the three summits critical of Iran after King Salman warned that recent "terrorist" attacks in the Gulf region could impede global energy supplies. After the recent attacks on oil infrastructure and regional shipping, Riyadh decided immediately to convene the meetings.

Anwar Gargash, UAE's foreign minister, criticised Doha for being "weak" under pressure. Khaleej Times reported also that he tweeted late Sunday "Seems to me that attendance and agreement in meetings and then backtracking on what was decided on is (a result of) pressure on the weak that lack sovereignty or have ill intentions or lack credibility, and it might be all these factors".
