Failure pursues Doha’s preparations to host the World Cup. Qatar seeks to cover up the failure to complete necessary infrastructure, plans to host 40k fans on tour boats and to force them to remain in the Gulf sea during the tournament.
Hamad Abdullah Al-Mulla, executive officer at Katara Hospitality acknowledged Qatari failure. “We plan to provide 20k rooms aboard the boats.”
A big increase compared to previous speculations.
Doha announced making available 6k rooms for 12k fans in 2015 and is scrambling to provide the minimum accommodation capacity.
Plans to establish 60K hotel rooms before 2022 are facing obstacles.
Hassan Al-Zawadi, executive president of the world cup organizing committee, suggested hosting fans in desert tents and hinted at using Airbnb to host spectators. Doha expects only 1.5 mil supporters in its cup down from Russia’s 3 mil fans.
