Qatar blocks news websites that criticize the government while the media self-censors itself to build closer ties with the ruling family.
In 2012, Doha suppressed stories on Villaggio mall fire to protect government officials. A few months later, when 13 Kids died in a nursery owned by the daughter of culture minister, the trial was conducted in complete silence and Doha News journalists were banned from covering it. Their website was eventually blocked for unveiling Qatar’s regime corruption.
The international organization criticized the conditions of migrant workers in 2013, accusing Doha of depriving Qataris and non-Qataris of political rights. It Described Qatar as a modern-day slavery state for migrant workers.
Three years later, 3 Danish journalists were detained for documenting violations committed against migrant workers in Qatar. They were not released until they were forced to confess falsehoods.
Qatar’s media doesn’t cover human rights reports critical of Doha, particularly reports that document Al Jazeera’s anti-Arabs rhetoric but remain silent on violations inside Doha.
Freedom House also condemned the muzzling freedom of speech and lack of diversity in Qatar.
