Iran opposes Qatari plan for Syria

Despite friendly relations with Qatar, Iran rejects Qatar's view on Syria, MEM reported.

“It is important for Iran to expand its relations with its neighbours,” explained Mohammad Javad Zarif in an interview with Al-Vefagh, “but that does not mean that it agrees with everything that these countries do.”

Zarif’s comments came after Qatari Foreign Minister Mohammed Bin Abdul Rahman Al-Thani said that his country did not see the need to reopen its embassy in Damascus. The Qatari official added that the government in Doha also still opposes Syria’s return to the Arab League.

The United Arab Emirates and Bahrain have recently reopened their respective embassies in Damascus. Efforts are being made, meanwhile, to “rehabilitate” Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad and let Syria take its chair at the League’s next meeting.
